The Web is getting away from text and that's very bad news

The Web is built on text from top to bottom (HTTP, ASCII, Unicode, HTML, JSON, etc.)

But there is more and more incoming content which is less and less text (Video, GIF, HTTP/2, etc.)

This has negative effect on accessibility and indexing (which in the end are the same)

XProc Quine

You may have heard of the Quicksort implementation in XProc of the famous algorithm in XProc

Here comes now the Quine, i.e a computer program which takes no input and produces a copy of its own source code as its only output.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<p:declare-step xmlns:p="http://www.w3.org/ns/xproc" version="1.0">
   <p>(c) Innovimax 2011 - The first XProc Quine</p>
 <p:output port="result"/>
   <p:input port="source">
       <p:declare-step version="1.0">
           <p>(c) Innovimax 2011 - The first XProc Quine</p>
         <p:output port="result"/>
           <p:input port="source">
         <p:insert match="p:inline" position="first-child">
           <p:input port="source"/>
           <p:input port="insertion"/>
 <p:insert match="p:inline" position="first-child">
   <p:input port="source"/>
   <p:input port="insertion"/>

It works in any of the many implementations of XProc. If you run for GPL, go look at QuiXProc

Innovimax provides a new product on the same product line as Droit-Algerie : Welcome Droit-Afrique-Pro.com

Droit-Algerie.com, went out in late 2007. It is the first website dedicated to Algerian business and tax laws. It is aimed at helping companies dealing permanently or temporarily within Algeria, as well as lawyers, legal advisors, associations and administrations.

Since then, we have:

  • improved dramatically our way to deal with legal content
  • fixed a lot of quirks
  • have a database that has grown more than 3 times
  • a faster search engine

Along with Droit-Algerie.com, we have now Droit-Afrique-Pro.com our new plateform: it is able to handle a whole family of countries at a time. We are starting by having informations on Cameroun and we will add a new country every 6 weeks : Bénin, Burkina Faso, Centrafrique, Comores, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Guinée, Guinée Equatoriale, Mali, Niger, Sénégal, Tchad et Togo

For the moment, all the content is in French, but we are planning very soon to have (at least) a multilingual interface

If you're interested in using the product, please feel free to fill this form

If you want us to build a new product, with Your Content on this plateform please fill this form

XML Prague MMX (2010) went very well

For its 5th edition, XML Prague MMX went very well !

A bunch of very good talks, among them, I have special mentions for Sharon Adler's on Why is Markup Still Important after 30 years and Will it Still be Important in Another 30 and the closing keynote of our fellow Guild Michael Sperberg-McQueen, The View from Prague.

There was much more people than previous editions, and we had to tackle some last minute reorganizations : we went out of beer !!!

Anyway, it was very refreshing to see that XML is not dead, and that an awful lot of people are style attracted by angle brackets !

Stay tuned

Montréal [Balisage] Streaming and Visual tools

I'm going to make two presentations in Montreal this year

One at the symposium headed by Mike Kay

Monday 10th, August 1:40 am - 12:20 pm

Memory management in streaming: buffering, lookahead, or none. Which to choose?

Although the ideal approach to streaming is to process markup events as soon as they are encountered,
with no memory needing to be used for storing parts of the input document, this is not always feasible,
and in practice it is useful to consider "near-streaming" approaches that involve a limited amount of buf-
fering or lookahead. In the extreme, however, such approaches degenerate until they are indistinguishable
from non-streaming processes. This paper attempts a classification of streaming and near-streaming
processing methods using different approaches to memory management, and discusses the advantages
and disadvantages of each.

The other one would be the next day at the Main Conference about Visual tools

Tuesday 4:45 pm- 5:30 pm

(LB) Visual Designers: Those XML tools with no angle bracket at all!

Is the future of XML planned to be without XML? Visual tools are everywhere and XProc might be the
first XML dialect to be immediately available with its visual editor. After erratic evolutions, visual tools
have become more and more precise (even HTML+CSS tools are now very powerful), and are become
more and more main stream. Could we imagine dealing with XML Schema without descent Visual Tools?
We will show in this presentation an overview of where we do XML without seeing any angle bracket and
the places where we expect to have some equivalent tools soon.

Again take a look at the program to see very interesting talks and very interesting speakers also !

See you in Montréal

PS (fr) : Il y aura quelques francophones pour les présentations alors n'hésitez pas à venir (Jacques Durand, Florent Georges, Eric Lemoine, Yves Marcoux)

The Wind of Changes in the Web

Opera 10 is about to be out (it is still a Beta for the moment)

IE 8 is already out since March

Google Chrome 3.0 is in preparation

The other news to mix with that is that
